Modern Higher Primary School

Students of Modern School

1927

April - May months of 1927 is a Red Letter Day in annals of the School, when Sri Narasing Rao started a School called ‘Gandhi School’. Within few years Sri K Jaganath Nayak took the responsibility as correspondant of the School and renamed the School as ‘Modern Higher Primary School’. In 1933 Government of Karnataka accorded the recognition to the School. Under the stewardship of Sri K Jaganath Nayak and Sri K B Ramakrishna Rao a strict disciplinarian and Headmaster of the School, the School scaled new heights and the Government of Karnataka accorded ‘Grant – in – Aid’ to the School.

1952

In 1952 when the School celebrated its Silver Jubilee, the ‘Old Student Association’ was formed under the President ship of Sri T A Pai. and Sri Ramesh Kamath Kalmady became the 1st secretary of the Association. After few years the Old Student Association became dormant. Due to the restrictive laws of the Government when it became very difficult to pay even the Salaries to Teachers, Sri T A Pai formed ‘Modern Higher Elementary School Benefit Trust’ and along with the School correspondant they tried very hard to bring at the School on the path of the success.

1966

In 1966 under the coordination of the Sri K Ramanath Rao and Sri U Rathnakar Adiga, both the teachers of the School, the Old Student Association was revived under the President ship of Dr. K Mohandas Pai. With the guidance of Sri H D S Pai, Shreesha Ballal, and Sri K V Pai, the Old Student Association provided all needy help to the School.

1977

In the 1977 the School celebrated its Golden Jubilee by organizing 5 days programme. In 1977 when the Old Students Association celebrated its Silver Jubilee, the highly respected correspondent of the School Sri K Jaganath Nayak died. His wife Srimathi Bavani Bai took the responsibility of correspondant of School for some time and she handed over the correspondant ship to Sri K S Kamath.

1985

However the in 1977 the Land owner filed a case in the District Court for eviction of the School. Though School won the case in the District Court, on appeal by the Landlord in the High Court, the High Court, in 1984 ordered the School to vacate the Land. At that time, the financial position of the Old Student Association and School Benefit Trust was not in good shape. However with the sole intention of retaining the School, the Old Students pooled their entire energy and purchased 35cents of Land nearby from Sri Sanjeeva Hedge and constructed the present School Building and started functioning since 1985.

Considering the poor state of the financial position of the Betterment Trust and the Old Student Association, and also the various types of problems faced by the School, Sri H D S Pai proposed transferring of School Management to T M A Pai Foundation and succeeded in it. The T M A Pai Foundation took over the Management of the School in 1985 and the School was renamed as T A Pai Modern Higher Primary School and the Benefit Trust was converted into ‘School Benefit Betterment Committee’.

1998

In 1998 School celebrated its Diamond Jubilee. During the year 2 Teachers i.e. Sri K Ramanth Rao and Sri K Janardhana Rao and Headmaster Sri H Laxminarayan Bhat retired from service. However due to ‘Grant – in – Aid regulations, which prescribes Teacher : Student ratio, no fresh recruitment of teachers could be made in place of Retired Teachers and T A Pai Foundation appointed the required number of teachers on contract basis. Subsequently after the death of Sri Rathnakar Adiga in 1991 and retirement of U Raghvendra Bhat and Srimathi Laxmi Bai in 1992 only two teachers were in the Grant – in - Aid list and all others were on contract basis helped by Foundation. In 1997 another teacher also retired and foundation fulfilled its obligation by providing teachers on contract basis. However due to change in the regulations in 2001, the school got 2 more teachers under ‘Grant - in – Aid’. At present the school is having total 8 number of teachers of which 4 are in ‘Grant - in – Aid’ and rest on contract basis supported by Foundation.

2002-2013

The School celebrated its 75th year in 2002 and Old Students Association celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2003. In 2012 the T A Pai Foundation expressed its inability to continue to support payment to contract teachers. In view this and in order to retain the schools functioning, which was started by its founder with the sole motto of providing education to poor, backward & down troden children of the society, a few Old Students have established a Trust called ‘Modern School Educational & Development Trust’ and Foundation has transferred the management of the School to the Trust with effect from 01/06/2013.

Now entire responsibility of management of the School including payment to contract teachers and maintenance of the School Building rests on the shoulders of the Trust. On an average, the Trust requires about Rs.10 Lakhs per year for the operations of the School, and therefore the Trust has decided to establish a corpus of Rs.1.70 to Rs 1.80 crores so that interest earned on the corpus fund is sufficient to take care of the financial needs of the School. Trust therefore appeals to the Entire Old Students of the School, will wishers and also philanthropists to donate liberally to Corpus Fund of the Trust. All donations to the Trust are eligible for deduction under section 80G of Income Tax as well as under Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) programmes under the Companies Act.
